Let me share… Handled well, gripe sessions can generate learning and make people think of doing something different (as long as the staff members ideas are included).
The magic formula is as follows:
Dissatisfaction x Vision of Future x Close the Gap = Change / D x V x C = C
D – Dissatisfaction is a result of the current reality
V – Vision of the future is generated as a result of brainstorming and involving all parties
C – Close the gap is taking the first steps in making that transition to change
C – Change is complete As a manager or leader actively listening to the gripe session or even purposefully stirring things up if need be, is a positive way to lead your team through change.
It ensures the staff are:
1. Able to say ‘the way that it is’ – builds assertiveness skills
2. Moving the team to a preferred future rather than one that is predictive
3. Leads to change through a structured approach
4. Less likely to be resistant if they are involved. They take responsibility to the success of the change
5. Listened to and you are not going to shoot the messenger!
